No One Understands Like Jesus

In all my growing up, Baptist church going years I don't recall ever hearing or singing this particular hymn.  That doesn't mean much because how could anyone possibly remember all the hymns sung over the course of 20 years or so?!?  :)  Back in 6th Grade I took a class at church on Sunday nights.  I learned music theory and other things pertaining to music.  As my graduation gift my teachers gave me a hymnal with my name engraved on it and took the time to write encouraging notes inside of it.  All these years I have treasured that hymnal.  A couple of years back I thought I had lost it and I felt so sad at the thought of it being gone so imagine my relief and delight when I re-discovered it!  Not only do I read and sing the hymns contained in it with a new heart and perspective that I couldn't possibly have had in 6th grade but I read the notes my wonderful teachers wrote to me and I realize, once again, that how I see myself is not how others see me.  I think perhaps others see me with clearer vision than I see myself.  But that's a thought to expound on in a blog not here!  ;)  Although it does lead to the message of this song.  No one understands me like Jesus.  I don't even understand me like Jesus does!  He knitted me together in my mother's womb and as he did so he also knitted together all the parts of me that make up my giftings and personality.  He understands me at a depth that I probably will never understand.  What a comfort I find that to be.  I love that in all my times, the joyful and the sad ones and all the ones that fall in between those, he understands.  I used to ask God to meet me there in my places but then I realized he already is there and is waiting for ME to meet HIM there!  :)  He's already there and waiting because he understands.  What a friend we have in Jesus indeed.  He understands us like nobody else can or does.

Butter someone up

There are two probable origins for this idiom and I think both are equally plausible. The first one is that when you spread butter on bread you are buttering it up like one would do when trying to flatter someone. The second is in ancient India there was a practice of throwing balls of butter at statues to ask for favor, i.e. buttering them up. ( source ) When we use the phrase today we generally mean that extreme flattery is used to gain information or favor. It's not always necessarily a compliment.

A dime a dozen

"It's said that in the year 1796, the first U.S. dimes were produced for circulation. Hence, it would make sense for this phrase to originate sometime after." Read more here .  Today the phrase carries the meaning that something is cheap or without value if it can be lumped in with other similar or exactly-like things. It's more of an insult than anything.

Life according to van Gogh...sort of

There are two ways of thinking about painting, how not to do it and how to do it; how to do it -- with much drawing and little color; how not to do it -- with much color and little drawing.   Vincent van Gogh in a l etter to Theo van Gogh, April 1882 Life is a little bit like today's quote from van Gogh.  Some of us live life focusing on the drawing - the details - and have very little color.  Others of us go for the color and forsake, to a degree, the drawing - the details.  Unlike painting, according to van Gogh, one is not wrong over the other but somewhere in between the two would be the best I would think.  If you look at some of van Gogh's paintings I feel like you can see where he might have struggled between the "how to do it" and the " how not to do it" (as he admittedly loved color so much but knew he had to focus more on the drawing) and that seems to be reflected in his life as well.  In the end he wasn't able to find the ...
