Day 77: Freedoms Protected

It's Veterans Day here in America.  A day in which we attempt to thank those who have served in our country's armed forces in the past to protect the many freedoms we enjoy.  I say attempt because it is terribly difficult to thank so many who have sacrificed much. But we still attempt.   I am grateful for the freedoms we have that are protected by brave men and women.  Despite all of our problems, issues, and flaws America still remains the country in the world that has perhaps the most diverse freedoms and perhaps the most freedoms (but don't quote me on that and also don't get your panties in a twist if I am wrong - who cares if I am, it's more about the point I'm trying to make) of any country on the planet. We still have varied religious freedoms, speech freedoms, reading freedoms, etc etc.  And those are protected in part by our armed forces.  So for those who have sacrificed much, laid down your lives, fought for the freedoms of this nation I am gra...

Day 16: Freedom

I suppose it seems a bit obvious that today of all days I might be grateful for freedom but so what?  I am.  I am grateful for many kinds of freedom in my life.  Not just the freedom I am afforded by living in a country that allows freedoms not known to other countries, not just the freedom I have because of others willing to fight for it and protect it.  I am so grateful for those freedoms.  But beyond those freedoms I have a greater one that I am grateful for .  It is, of course, the freedom I have because I have put Christ as the authority over my life. Because I have allowed the One who knit me together and gave my life a purpose to have reign in my life.  And because of that freedom in and through him I have freedom to be in relationship with him .  And through that relationship from him I get to experience freedom from fear of others, freedom from fear of circumstances, freedom from things that try to drag me down and keep me from who I rea...

The way to liberty

Seek freedom and become captive of your desires. Seek discipline and find your liberty.   Frank Herbert If you want true freedom, which is liberty, then you must practice and incorporate discipline into your life.  It seems backward but it is true.  The only way to true liberty is to live a life of discipline.  I'm not talking about the kind that is exerted over us by governments or power hungry people.  I'm talking about the kind of discipline that comes from within.  Choosing moderation, denying selfishness, participating in behavior that is defined by integrity - ethics - responsibility, etc.  When we seek freedom we become slaves to unrealistic expectations and desires.  We are never satisfied or fulfilled but always reaching for something that doesn't actually exist.  We think freedom comes through pursuing our desires but it really comes through allowing discipline to be part of our lives.  In what may seem an ironic twist to us...

Unseen bondage

Shame erases hope.   Unknown We are held captive and in an unseen bondage when we allow shame to speak over and into our lives.  Shame is made of a "material" that is hard to break.  And when we apply it to ourselves or to others we are placing a sentence on us or them.  Shame keeps the poverty stricken in poverty, even if their material wealth rebounds.  Shame keeps the abused in victim mode, even if healing has presented itself.  Shame keeps the insecure timid, even if strength has been demonstrated   Shame keeps the young girl with babies from her family, even if they have reached out.  Shame keeps *you* silent, even when it is right that you speak.  Shame keeps *you* believing the lies, even when the truth is so evident.  Hope is the freedom and shame is the bondage.  To choose freedom is to choose hope and we are the only ones who can choose it for ourselves.  Other people may try to hand us hope,...

So? Do you understand?

You find out if you understand the gospel when you fail. Approach the throne of grace with confidence? Or go away to “clean yourself” before going back to God? If we don’t approach the throne of grace boldly after sinning, we don’t understand or we forgot the Gospel.   Matt Chandler Newsflash:  you can't get clean enough before approaching God.  You can't.  So don't even try.  Just go. And go BOLDLY. Hebrews 4:16 tells us we can.  Actually Hebrews 4:14-16 tells us why we can go as dirty as we might be before God - because God gets it.  He's experienced all that we have but stopped at the point of sinning.  (He had to or else he couldn't be our Savior.)  So he gets the temptations, the doubts and fears that lead us down roads we didn't think we would ever travel, the moment of insanity in which we do something that leads us down a spiraling staircase.  He gets it and he doesn't condemn us for it...when we come to him.  But we can'...

Risk

If you are not willing to risk the unusual, you will have to settle for the ordinary.    Jim Rohn Risk is  loosely  defined as the chance of loss.  Settle is  loosely  defined as "to come to" and "to become quiet and orderly".   You  have decide what kind of life you want to lead.  One that will be filled with chance but few regrets or one that will be played safe, quiet and orderly and also filled with longings unfilled because the "what if" of loss seemed to overwhelming.   I'm not a risk taker by nature.  It's scary and I don't like scary.  But at some point in my 30's I decided I had better start taking some risks on things that seemed scary to me (but clearly weren't to others!).  For my own personal beliefs I knew that the "what if" of the thing I felt God asking me to risk was not near as scary as the idea of disobeying the One who I call LORD.  I was, I still am, much more "frightened" * of disobeying...
