Piece of cake

The most interesting theory I found about the origin of this phrase was it popped up in the 1870s when slaves would hold dances mocking the mannerisms of their masters. The couple who won the contest would get a cake as their prize. Thus the dances became known as "a piece of cake" because it was so easy to mock their masters and win. HA! ( source ) So today when someone says, "That's a piece of cake" they are referring to the ease of which something can be done.

Icing on the cake

The term is literal in its meaning and origin. It comes from the early 1900s when a sweet, creamy coating (icing) was used to cover a cake. The cake itself was sweet enough so when the coating was added it was...icing on the cake.  Now when the term is used it means anything extra to something already great is bonus.

Cake Day   Do we really need any ideas on how to observe/celebrate cake day?!  What's YOUR favorite kind of cake? Today indulge in it! Thanksgiving Day Until 1789 days of Thanksgiving were celebrated on random days and throughout the year and then on October 3, 1789 President George Washington made Thanksgiving "a thing." He issued the first Thanksgiving proclamation and then on October 3, 1863 President Abraham Lincoln established the day as a holiday , and in 1941 it was passed into law by Congress. Thanksgiving Proclamation Issued by President George Washington, at the request of Congress, on October 3, 1789 By the President of the United States of America, a Proclamation. Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and—Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me “to recom...

October 10, 1974 - 45 days after I was born - Sarah was born. Our parents had double dated, been in each other's weddings, pregnant Mama's rubbed their bellies together. We were the kind of family that can be deeper than blood.   Today Sarah would be 41 years old. (For Sarah's story click here .) I will celebrate her life by drinking an Arnold Palmer, baking her scone recipe, and watching a few episodes of The Office, the last show she loved to watch before she flew away to be with Jesus. Oh I'll probably run the vacuum too, she LOVED to vacuum - for real!  I love you Sarah.  World Porridge Day In America we generally call it oatmeal, other countries call it porridge. Doesn't matter what it's called, it's just yummy!  I am a big fan of oatmeal, I know lots of people who have texture issues with it - I'm so sad for them!  :)  And I have only ever made porridge with oatmeal but I have learned that it can be other grains and cereals - yay! I lo...

Hug Your Cat Day Um, I can't - I'm allergic.  But go ahead and hug yours and someone else's! Tailors Day Two things that immediately come to mind when I hear the word tailor. Here's the first one, for a laugh... The second one is more serious.  While they aren't called tailors I think of the thousands of people working for next to nothing and in some cases by force to make clothes for developed countries to purchase and wear.  These factories are called sweatshops, a slang term for the kind of environment these people work in. While the majority of underdeveloped countries have the largest number of sweatshops there are still ones in existence in developed nations like the U.S. Here are 11 facts about sweatshops you and I need to be aware of 10 Major Clothing Brands That Use Sweatshops Keeping a closet sweatshop free is difficult but here's 5 tips to get us started School yourself and then make a change .  Even one change can make a difference and a...
