Until the 1930s this phrase was strictly used for guns and shootings but then it started being used in its modern way, performing an action with haste. ( source )

Draw a blank

In Tudor England Elizabeth I, in an attempt to turn around a national debt, signed the license in 1567 to have a national lottery. Drawing a blank was a phrase used when someone drew a blank lottery ticket. It's a pretty fascinating history, read about it here . Throughout the centuries the phrase evolved into how we use it today, to fail to recall a memory or fail in some speculative effort.

Zoo Lovers Day Okay so if you know me well you know how I feel about zoos.  I don't like them.  I have tolerated them for my husband and my children, for a work function, and for out of town guests who want to see our zoo on the mountainside .  But my days at the zoo are numbered.  However, I know that people love the zoo.  A lot.  So try to get to your local zoo today and enjoy!  And thank the zookeepers you see, they work hard to keep the animals healthy and out of extinction.
