Eat humble pie

The potential original origin of this phrase dates back to the 14th century and a rather unsavory kind of pie. Specifically a pie of offal. *gag* Back then offal was called "umble(s)" so people who were poorer and couldn't afford the expensive meats, i.e. non-offal, ate umble pies. The thought is the expression morphed into a figurative one for humility due to the humble station one has to be living in to eat offal pie. ( source )

As easy as pie

Today's idiom isn't because pie is easy to make, it is because pie is easy to eat. Can I get a witness? Used in the figurative sense it means the thing referred to is easy.

Pie in the sky

Originally this phrase meant something very different than it does now. In 1911 Joe Hill wrote a parody of the Salvation Army song In the Sweet Bye and Bye and the phrase shows up in his parody. To find out how it changed from its original intent to what is means today click here .
