Day 172: Love

I know.  It's SO obvious that today's Gratitude Attitude is love.  But I can't help it! I did reflect on love this morning and I AM grateful for the many different kinds of love that exist.  All the different loves enrich our lives (if we allow them to) and help mold us into people who have capacity for great love. So many different types of love hit me upon reflection this morning. The love of a parent.  14 years ago our second child was born on this day, she is our forever valentine! And that love has only grown over the 14 years of her life.  It's a fierce love, a soft love, a concerned love, and even a love that has a healthy fear within it.  (Btw, I have that same kind of love for our firstborn as well.) The love of a spouse.  It's a different love now than it was 19 years ago. The love of a spouse is more choice based than feeling based.  (Sputter and deny all you want but then think.  Think carefully.  I'm right aren't I?) The...

Day 101: 3 Ways I know the Love of God

Today I'm choosing to have a Gratitude Attitude for the ways in which I know God loves me. 1)  It's not condition based.  For example, I don't have to be on my best behavior for God to love me. 2)  It is relentless.  God's love doesn't stop coming after me, or you for that matter. 3)  It is complete.  His love is the most complete "thing" I, and you, will ever possess in my life.  God's love rounds me out and completes me.

Hi self, it's nice to meet you.

Would you like you, if you met you.  Tegan and Sara Be honest with yourself.  Don't be portray false modesty and don't be arrogant.  Be honest with yourself - would you like you if you met you?  Be willing to see your positive traits and be willing to acknowledge your flaws.  What isn't positive about yourself work on to turn it around.  Don't use the lame excuse, "Well that's just the way I am so take me or leave me" because you are going to get left and if you were honest with yourself you'd leave yourself if you could.  C'mon, you know - deep down - who you are.  So would you like you if you met you?

I'm a ticking love bomb!

I don't remember who said this, but there really are places in the heart you don't even know exist until you love a child.   Anne Lamott Motherhood has been one of the biggest surprises in my life.  It may even trump the surprises of marriage.  Every year I say it has been the hardest or most challenging or most scary or most unnerving.   Every year I say that!  In the midst of mothering I lose sight of the rewards, a lot of days there doesn't feel like there are many.  Perhaps there aren't.  Perhaps the rewards are when the children are grown and out of the house and you have your distance from mothering them so intently and you can see what and who they have become, some as a direct result of your mothering.  Every so often I am reminded of the rewards in the here and now.  When I get an unexpected hug or kiss, when I get an understanding look on the days I am in tears for inexplicable reasons, when some stranger to our family...

For Wednesday, April 24: Sweet or Sour?

When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You know that your name is safe in their mouth.   Jess C. Scott Is the way you say the names of the people you say you love sweet or sour in your mouth?  Be honest.  When you say their name do they feel safe in your care for them?  Even in disappointment, anger, etc is the way you speak their name sweet or sour?  Does the love you have for others overpower those times when you are disappointed, angry, etc?  If it does their names will be as sweet as honey in your mouth.  If the love is not as strong then their names will leave a pucker in your mouth and they will feel unsafe in your presence.  Think about it.

For Saturday, March 23: Are you settling for less?

We accept the love we think we deserve.   Stephen Chbosky Oy.  When I read this quote I thought to myself, "ouch."  I recognize this in myself, how about you?  With immediate clarity I realized I have, in the past, sabotaged relationships that might be offering more love than I think or feel I deserve.  I'm willing to bet *you* have done it or still do it as well.  Somehow along the way of my life journey I let bad and wrong belief about myself define the love I will accept.  And I've let that definition dictate my relationships and the level of affection.  I've decided certain things about the interactions in my relationships and become uncomfortable when someone comes along that once to crash through that definition and challenge it.  Or I accept less because I don't deserve more.  Ugh, right?  But I'm pretty sure *you* know exactly what I am talking about. How do you see today's quote in your life?  Or do you? ...

For Sunday, March 3: Do you use or love people?

People were created to be loved.  Things were created to be used.  The reason the world is in chaos is because things are being loved and people are being used.   Unknown Today's quote is put really well.  Whoever "unknown" is they said it perfectly.  When we put things (jobs, financial gain, big people toys, electronics, success, etc etc) ahead of people and use those people to get those things then we have thrown our world and the worlds of others into disarray.  No thing should be loved more than a person.  Things won't love you back, they won't fulfill you long-term, they won't give you what you are looking for - only people can assist in those pursuits.  I say assist because I have personally experienced that only God can truly love you, fulfill you, and give you what you are looking for but he will ask people to participate in your life to accomplish those.  :)  But I digress... How does this topic look in y...

To love and be loved

Those who love you are not fooled by mistakes you have made or dark images you hold about yourself. They remember your beauty when you feel ugly; your wholeness when you are broken; your innocence when you feel guilty; and your purpose when you are confused.   Alan Cohen I adore today's quote.  I am challenged by today's quote.  Today's quote starts my Rolodex of names, searching for the ones who love me in the ways today's quote describes and reminding me of who I love in this way.  In our humanness love is a tricky thing because we place conditions on it.   We place external and internal conditions on our love for others, we base it on performance, we define it according to our baggage.  Love in our humanness is a tricky, tricky thing.  And oftentimes we equate love and worth/value.  So if we are having a hard time loving someone then we also are probably having a hard time treating them with worth.   Back t...

What is Love?

Try not to confuse "attachment" with "love".  Attachment is about fear and dependency and has more to do with love of self than love of another.  Love without attachment is the purest love because it isn't about what others can give you because you're empty.  It is about what you can give others because you're already full.   Yasmin Mogahed Well happy valentine's day!  Today's quote popped up in my queue and I thought, "Why not!" *grin* When you can love without tying someone to you and trying to tie yourself to someone then you know you are loving in healthy and right ways.  Yes we can be attached but what is the attachment created from?  Chains of fear and co-dependency or "chains" of freedom and unconditional love (which aren't chains at all really)?  When we attach ourselves to someone and call it "love" it is only really love when we are not dependent on them for our emotions, our fulfillment, and our s...

For Sunday, February 10: Resolve to Love

The beginning of love is the will to let those we love be perfectly themselves, the resolution not to twist them to fit our own image.   Thomas Merton If we love, truly love, someone then we will love them for who they are and not who we think they should be.  We will not try to transform the person into our ideas of what they should do, be, look like, etc.  If we find ourselves try to twist someone we say we love into our own image then perhaps we should ask ourselves, "Do we really love them?" and if so, "Why do we love them?"  We need to be resolved to love others well.  Loving well means we let them be themselves as they are letting us be ourselves.

To love and to serve

....to love the Lord your God and to walk in all His ways and to keep His commandments and to cling to and unite with Him and to serve Him with all your heart and soul [your very life].   Joshua 22:5 AMP If you believe in God what do you mean when you say you love him and serve him?  What is your definition of that?  Does it mean you go to a church on Sunday mornings and maybe Wednesday nights?  Is that what loving God and serving God means to you?  Or is it more?  Are you on a journey to figure out what it is still?   I love today's quote from the book of Joshua in the Bible.  It indicates to me that loving God and serving him probably is defined best without including a church building/denomination/etc.  When I look at today's quote and I read it with an open heart and mind and clear eyes I see that loving and serving God is defined by obeying all of his word, uniting myself to him, and allowing my life to be changed by his word. ...

Does your generosity have a "cap"?

You should not buy anything that you are not willing to give away.   Unknown On the surface today's quote seems to be about that favorite topic of mine - not hoarding and not having clutter in your home.  On the surface I suppose today's quote is partially about that BUT I'd like to go deeper than the surface.  (Shocker eh?)   Today's quote to me speaks of  generosity  and  selflessness  or selfishness.  Are you willing to bless or gift someone else with what you just purchased?  It could range from a cup of coffee to groceries to paying an overdue utility bill to fill in the blank .  And if you aren't willing to, why not?  What stops you?  Is it your own financial state?  Is it not being able to take the person's need at face value?  Is it simply that you are feeling selfish (because whether we admit it or not we all do feel selfish more than we would like to recognize)?  Does your generosity have a "ca...
