Affirmation Day 79

Think Before You Eat The Four-Letter Word That Can End Mindless Eating Forever

Eat humble pie

The potential original origin of this phrase dates back to the 14th century and a rather unsavory kind of pie. Specifically a pie of offal. *gag* Back then offal was called "umble(s)" so people who were poorer and couldn't afford the expensive meats, i.e. non-offal, ate umble pies. The thought is the expression morphed into a figurative one for humility due to the humble station one has to be living in to eat offal pie. ( source )

Eat my hat

The origin of this phrase isn't clear and there are two possible ones. One is a figurative origin and the other is based off of a 15th century veal pie. But that origin has been labeled a 'nice story' and not very probable. You can read about the origin of the phrase here . Using this phrase indicates that the person is very certain of an outcome and would be surprised if something happened differently and that surprise would cause them to do something so crazy like trying to eat a hat, which is impossible.

Eat crow

The original phrase is believed to be “to eat boiled crow”, but either way, using the term “eat crow” to mean to be proven wrong, is thought to have first appeared in or around 1850. Read about it's earlier beginnings and it's evolution here . Perhaps eating crow meant to be proven wrong all along because someone first uttered, "Crow can't taste that bad" and then preceded to eat the crow and discover they were very wrong. Ha!

Dog eat dog

In the year 43 BC, Roman scholar Marcus Terentius Varro observed humanity and remarked that even “a dog will not eat dog.” His point was that humans are less principled in the matter of destroying their own kind than other animals. By the sixteenth century, the phrase became a metaphor for ruthless competition. And during the Industrial Revolution the expression “It’s a dog-eat-dog world” became commonplace. ( source )

You are what you eat

Anthelme Brillat-Savarin wrote, in Physiologie du Gout, ou Meditations de Gastronomie Transcendante, 1826: "Dis-moi ce que tu manges, je te dirai ce que tu es." [Tell me what you eat and I will tell you what you are]. In an essay titled Concerning Spiritualism and Materialism, 1863/4, Ludwig Andreas Feuerbach wrote: "Der Mensch ist, was er ißt." That translates into English as 'man is what he eats'. For an in-depth explanation of the origin and evolution of the term click here .
