Seek freedom and become captive of your desires. Seek discipline and find your liberty. Frank Herbert
If you want true freedom, which is liberty, then you must practice and incorporate discipline into your life. It seems backward but it is true. The only way to true liberty is to live a life of discipline. I'm not talking about the kind that is exerted over us by governments or power hungry people. I'm talking about the kind of discipline that comes from within. Choosing moderation, denying selfishness, participating in behavior that is defined by integrity - ethics - responsibility, etc. When we seek freedom we become slaves to unrealistic expectations and desires. We are never satisfied or fulfilled but always reaching for something that doesn't actually exist. We think freedom comes through pursuing our desires but it really comes through allowing discipline to be part of our lives. In what may seem an ironic twist to us freedom becomes very clear in a life defined by discipline. Why? Because discipline works for us, giving us the ability to see things we could only hope for come to pass. How about you? How have you seen discipline show you the way to liberty?
