For Friday, September 21: Peace IN

Peace is not the absence of trouble but the presence of Christ.  Sheila Walsh

I have great news!  Peace is the presence of God in your life!  And who couldn't use peace?  In this crazy, messy, tumultuous world we live in peace is something we all crave, whether we are aware of it or not.  And we can have peace even in the midst of trouble as Walsh says in today's quote.  "Impossible", you may mutter under your breath, "I'm in a world of trouble right now due to fill in the blank and I have no peace.  There's no such thing as having peace in the midst of crap."  My counter would be to inquire whether or not you know Jesus.  Because when you know him, I mean really know him, you will have peace and it will astound you and everyone around you.  I can say this because I have life experience that backs it up.  I can say this because God promises to be peace in our lives and he does not and can not lie so it is true.
So often we think that peace exists only when the waters are calm, so to speak.  And peace disappears when the water starts rippling and moving about.  Not so in my experience.  I have experience in the past few years that says otherwise.  I walked through a betrayal a few years ago.  It was big enough to make some ripples in my former workplace, the lives of friends and family, and me of course.  But through it all I had peace.  It made no sense, this peace I had.  People were confused, I was confused...but not.  I trusted God's defense of me.  That's the only explanation I have.  I trusted God would defend me as he told me he would.  And guess what?  For the short-term, as I was sifting through the betrayal, I had peace, quite amazing really.  And in the long-term my trust in God was realized as I was able to see him defend me.  And I had peace through it all.  (It was about a 4-5 year process...no joke.  Painful moments weaved all in those 4-5 years.)  So I'm here, on the other side of it, telling you that you can have peace because Christ is peace.
Don't look for him where there isn't trouble (although he is there also), look for him right in the middle of the trouble and that's where you'll find him and the peace you need.

Butter someone up

There are two probable origins for this idiom and I think both are equally plausible. The first one is that when you spread butter on bread you are buttering it up like one would do when trying to flatter someone. The second is in ancient India there was a practice of throwing balls of butter at statues to ask for favor, i.e. buttering them up. ( source ) When we use the phrase today we generally mean that extreme flattery is used to gain information or favor. It's not always necessarily a compliment.

A dime a dozen

"It's said that in the year 1796, the first U.S. dimes were produced for circulation. Hence, it would make sense for this phrase to originate sometime after." Read more here .  Today the phrase carries the meaning that something is cheap or without value if it can be lumped in with other similar or exactly-like things. It's more of an insult than anything.

Life according to van Gogh...sort of

There are two ways of thinking about painting, how not to do it and how to do it; how to do it -- with much drawing and little color; how not to do it -- with much color and little drawing.   Vincent van Gogh in a l etter to Theo van Gogh, April 1882 Life is a little bit like today's quote from van Gogh.  Some of us live life focusing on the drawing - the details - and have very little color.  Others of us go for the color and forsake, to a degree, the drawing - the details.  Unlike painting, according to van Gogh, one is not wrong over the other but somewhere in between the two would be the best I would think.  If you look at some of van Gogh's paintings I feel like you can see where he might have struggled between the "how to do it" and the " how not to do it" (as he admittedly loved color so much but knew he had to focus more on the drawing) and that seems to be reflected in his life as well.  In the end he wasn't able to find the ...
