I Have A Dream: Common & Will.I.Am

Great song!  I had forgotten about the movie "Freedom Writers" and this song was featured in it.  So today is a great day to get your hands on a copy of the movie Freedom Writers and watch it - for the first time or again.
MLK Jr made his speech and made his moves in a time when our Nation forgot what our Nation was founded on.  So primarily he was speaking about freedom or choice for the Aferican American population BUT I love this video and song because Common and Will.I.Am make it a point that it isn't JUST about the black people but it's about any person who is mistreated for their color, religious choices, culture, etc.  They make it a point to highlight the Holocaust and its horrors.  I appreciate that they didn't just stick with proclaiming that freedom should be for just the African Americans but for anyone who is mistreated.
Dreams inspire us to reach out to make a difference.  But a dream can only take us so far.  WE have to make some choices.  WE have to put some effort it.  We cannot nor should we expect to have things handed to us simply because way back our ancestors were mistreated.  We are not our ancestors, we are us and we have a choice today.  And our ancestors would be ashamed of us!  They didn't ask for nor expect anything to be handed to them that was outside the realm of reality and they would be shocked that we do!  So let's do our ancestors who were mistreated proud.  Let's fulfill their dreams and ours by making choices that lead us down a healthier and better path.  Don't join some gang and say that the mistreatment of your ancestors caused you to do that, my guess is your ancestor would smack you upside the head for saying that!  Be smart.  Take a cue from the jewish people who emerged from the horrors of WWII and built lives that can be admired today.
If MLK Jr was still alive today I wonder what dreams he would have continued to place in front of his people and all people?

Butter someone up

There are two probable origins for this idiom and I think both are equally plausible. The first one is that when you spread butter on bread you are buttering it up like one would do when trying to flatter someone. The second is in ancient India there was a practice of throwing balls of butter at statues to ask for favor, i.e. buttering them up. ( source ) When we use the phrase today we generally mean that extreme flattery is used to gain information or favor. It's not always necessarily a compliment.

More bang for your buck

This phrase was used a lot in 1953 but an earlier citation puts it at 1940 in a Metals and Plastics Publications advertisement. Read about it here . The phrase means you get more for your money.

Call it a Day

The literal use of this phrase hails from 1838 when the phrase originally was "call it half a day" to mean leaving work early. (source) The modern use of the phrase is to indicate ending something due to false sense of accomplishment.
