Stars and Stripes Forever

Veteran's Day.  THANK YOU men and women who have selflessly served our country and ensured our freedoms while putting your lives on the line.  The older I get the more I appreciate this service that has been performed.

It hit me this morning that it's kind of like what Jesus did on the cross for us.  Jesus took on the punishment for my sins and paid the price for them and all I had to do was accept it.  I think about the conversation he and the thief on the cross next to him had and see this in a similar light.  Jesus said, "I'll take your sins on myself.  I'll do it."  The thief recognized the gift and said, "Okay."  Our men and women in military service to this country have said, "We'll do it.  We'll put our lives on the line, ourselves in harms way to gain freedoms for this country."  And us, the citizens, have said, "Okay."  Our men and women in the military deserve our gratitude, our helping hand when they return, our kindness.  Those who want to protest the wars and the military don't seem to realize that the only reason they are allowed to even open their mouths to protest is because someone has fought for that freedom!  No other country in the world has the freedom and ability to speak up and out as we do, to move freely around the country as we do, to worship according to personal preference the ways that we do, to dress in all the diverse ways that we do, etc etc.  I could go on and on.  It gets me riled when people sit around and complain about our military.  They are fighting for our FREEDOM.  Quit complaining and go down to your local Veteran's hall and extend some gratitude.  Sheesh!  But we've done that to Jesus also, haven't we?  (Oh, see how I'm returning and tying in?  Good one eh? Haha)  We sit around and complain that God doesn't do enough for us, that we don't like the kind of freedoms he offers us through life in him.  Jesus died for our FREEDOM.  So quit assuming you know what God wants out of you, find someone who will walk with you and show you what freedom in Christ really looks like and begin to be grateful for the gift, the FREE gift, that God has offered!  :)

Back to Veteran's Day.  I LOVE John Phillips Sousa. That man was composed of patriotism through and through.  I remember years ago my brother, Paul, was in a musical about Sousa at his middle school and he was Sousa and ever since then I have had a deep affection for Sousa's music.  So today I have chosen Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever" as the main song of the day BUT I have included some bonus songs, very short, and I hope you'll take the time to listen to them.  I have included the songs for each military branch of the United States of America.  It takes great courage and great love for America to lay their lives on the line for this nation and its citizens, there is great pride within each branch and its "theme" song, as there should be.

Take the time today to thank those - past and present - who have served this country and ensured our freedoms!

Butter someone up

There are two probable origins for this idiom and I think both are equally plausible. The first one is that when you spread butter on bread you are buttering it up like one would do when trying to flatter someone. The second is in ancient India there was a practice of throwing balls of butter at statues to ask for favor, i.e. buttering them up. ( source ) When we use the phrase today we generally mean that extreme flattery is used to gain information or favor. It's not always necessarily a compliment.

A dime a dozen

"It's said that in the year 1796, the first U.S. dimes were produced for circulation. Hence, it would make sense for this phrase to originate sometime after." Read more here .  Today the phrase carries the meaning that something is cheap or without value if it can be lumped in with other similar or exactly-like things. It's more of an insult than anything.

Life according to van Gogh...sort of

There are two ways of thinking about painting, how not to do it and how to do it; how to do it -- with much drawing and little color; how not to do it -- with much color and little drawing.   Vincent van Gogh in a l etter to Theo van Gogh, April 1882 Life is a little bit like today's quote from van Gogh.  Some of us live life focusing on the drawing - the details - and have very little color.  Others of us go for the color and forsake, to a degree, the drawing - the details.  Unlike painting, according to van Gogh, one is not wrong over the other but somewhere in between the two would be the best I would think.  If you look at some of van Gogh's paintings I feel like you can see where he might have struggled between the "how to do it" and the " how not to do it" (as he admittedly loved color so much but knew he had to focus more on the drawing) and that seems to be reflected in his life as well.  In the end he wasn't able to find the ...
