#FridayFocus

It seems that we often confuse busyness with productivity. They aren't the same...at all. Sometimes busyness doesn't accomplish anything.

For example, one day I looked at our CD collection and decided I was over it. So I unloaded all of our CD's on the living room floor and started sorting them by artist so I could see what we have. I wanted to weed out some - or most of them. It kept me busy for a good hour. When I finally got them all sorted I decided to keep the stacks as they were so my husband could decide what he wanted to keep and what he could part with. I was so proud of how busy I had been with this project. 23 days later they were still in their neat stacks on the floor waiting. Still waiting for the hub and I to do something with them.

So was my CD project productive? No it wasn't. It kept me busy but in the end not productive. Had it been a productive project I would have wrapped it up within no more than a few days of the initial sorting. I had lost focus - and perhaps a bit of motivation but today is about focus. *grin* I don't think I'm alone in this confusion between busyness and productivity. The difference between the two comes down to focus. I found an article that gives the readers 7 ways to focus on what really matters. I found it to be helpful on determining if what I'm about to give me energy to is just busy work or productivity. Perhaps you will find it helpful as well.

The End of Affirmation 365

I've been thinking about it for over a month. Usually, when I'm in it I'm engaged. But this time? I started it indifferent and I've felt indifferent all along. I should have never started. Hindsight is 20/20 they say and they aren't wrong. So when I opened my eyes this morning it was clear. It's time. Time to quit this 365. This is the first 365 that I haven't posted several of the days, the first 365 that I wasn't super excited about, the first 365 that I've quit. I've changed my social media presence and interactions the past year so this is also the first 365 that hardly anyone has been interested in. Is it the topic or my decision to not be as accessible on social media? Or is it some other reason altogether? Well, regardless...I'm throwing in the towel on this one. I can't say if I'll ever do another 365 again. Time will tell and I will know if and when it's time.

Call it a Day

The literal use of this phrase hails from 1838 when the phrase originally was "call it half a day" to mean leaving work early. (source) The modern use of the phrase is to indicate ending something due to false sense of accomplishment.
