Rule of thumb


The origin of the phrase is unknown but there are quite a few theories out there. One of the more popular theories is that there was a law back in the day that a man was allowed to beat his wife as long as the stick was no thicker than his thumb. There is no proof to this theory but it is a popular one for sure. (source)

In use today it's meaning is that it is "generally thought of" (to be a wise idea, to practice a particular habit, etc).
