Day 319: Writing

I love to write.  I may stink at it but I love to do it.  I have found that my personality communicates best through written word rather than verbal.  I've always been drawn to writing, probably because I'm a reader. They kind of go hand-in-hand. :) I remember when I was in junior high, I think, my parents got me a Brother Word Processor for Christmas.  This was a big deal for two reasons.  1) That was "the thing" then - nobody had computers and typewriters were being phased out with the word processor so that means they weren't cheap.  2) My parents were, in gifting me with that particular thing, acknowledging and encouraging my love of writing. (SIDENOTE: Parents, even if it isn't your thing, encourage and help your child develop what they love.)  I remember spending hours in my room writing stories on my word processor.  I love to write.  I'm grateful that I love to write.  I'm grateful for it because it provides me a personal outlet, a way to process, a form of expression, a chance to formulate what I really want to say out loud.  What are you grateful for today? It can be anything! And if you haven't been grateful yet today for something stop for moment and reflect, you won't regret it.

This is what my word processor looked like!
Oh memories...
:)

Call it a Day

The literal use of this phrase hails from 1838 when the phrase originally was "call it half a day" to mean leaving work early. (source) The modern use of the phrase is to indicate ending something due to false sense of accomplishment.

More bang for your buck

This phrase was used a lot in 1953 but an earlier citation puts it at 1940 in a Metals and Plastics Publications advertisement. Read about it here . The phrase means you get more for your money.

A dime a dozen

"It's said that in the year 1796, the first U.S. dimes were produced for circulation. Hence, it would make sense for this phrase to originate sometime after." Read more here .  Today the phrase carries the meaning that something is cheap or without value if it can be lumped in with other similar or exactly-like things. It's more of an insult than anything.
