For Tuesday, August 9: Like My Mother Does

Lauren Alaina was the runner-up in this most recent season of AI.  Just like Scotty blew us away in auditions so did she.  I mean THAT voice coming out of that little 15 year old?  Crazy! It seems that like Scotty Lauren comes from good family.  She's very close to her parents and you can tell that they did a great job of giving her a firm foundation to stand on for life.  We loved, and still love, about Lauren that she is so confident in who she is that she isn't too fazed about body remarks that have been thrown her way.  She's beautiful and curvy and that's all okay!
This song is done beautifully!  The power in Lauren's voice is very comparable to Faith Hill or Martina McBride.  I can imagine they might be kicking themselves for not picking up the song, if they had the chance.  The voice Lauren has is right up there with the big girls of country. She's gonna do just fine.  :)

Call it a Day

The literal use of this phrase hails from 1838 when the phrase originally was "call it half a day" to mean leaving work early. (source) The modern use of the phrase is to indicate ending something due to false sense of accomplishment.

More bang for your buck

This phrase was used a lot in 1953 but an earlier citation puts it at 1940 in a Metals and Plastics Publications advertisement. Read about it here . The phrase means you get more for your money.

Butter someone up

There are two probable origins for this idiom and I think both are equally plausible. The first one is that when you spread butter on bread you are buttering it up like one would do when trying to flatter someone. The second is in ancient India there was a practice of throwing balls of butter at statues to ask for favor, i.e. buttering them up. ( source ) When we use the phrase today we generally mean that extreme flattery is used to gain information or favor. It's not always necessarily a compliment.
