Hack Writer


This expression is actually quite literal in its original meaning. Authors who were finding it difficult to provide for themselves and their families would be hackney drivers. A hackney was a horse that was easy to ride and for hire. The term evolved into meaning authors who would write easy pieces with little skill for money.

Today the term has the implication that a person claims writing as his/her profession but isn't good at it...at all.
