Boy Scout Day
The Founders of the Boy Scouts
The Mission & Vision Statement
In 2010 the Boy Scouts celebrated their 100th Anniversary by converging on Washington D.C. Unfortunately, for our family, we ended up there the same week. SIGH. Every national monument, museum, etc that we wanted to go to was overtaken by Boy Scouts, 50,000 of them.  Because of them we didn't get into the National Archives, a Spy Museum, the Holocaust Museum, and a few other places. It was incredibly frustrating. Many stayed at the same hotel we did and the breakfast every morning was literally overrun with boy scouts.  Needless to say the boy scouts have made us a little bitter. :)

Kite Flying Day
Not quite sure why this holiday is held in February where the chances of flying a kite in the northern hemisphere are little to none, perhaps this is a southern hemisphere holiday!

Molasses Bar Day
It's taken me a long time to like Molasses, and even now it can't be too dark or too strong.  I can take it in small amounts so I'm not too sure if Molasses Bars are the thing for me.  How do you feel about Molasses?
What Exactly Is Molasses, Anyway?

Laugh and Get Rich Day
I'm not sure what to say about this BUT I do believe that the richest we can be is in relationships. True wealth isn't found in piles of money and acquired stuff, it's found in the people who you allow to be part of your life.

Opera Day
All you've ever wondered or wanted to know about Opera
Here's what comes to mind when I think of Opera, don't judge! *wink*

World Marriage Day
Marriage is not for the faint of heart, can I get an amen?  It's tough and fun and hard and lovely. It requires that we consider others and learn and live that we are not the center of the universe.  Your spouse will push buttons you didn't even know you had and you will do the same to them.  Marriage means you have someone to lay next to on the nights when the days have sucked you dry and you can barely breathe. Marriage is awesome and awful! I have a Pinterest board for marriage articles, funnies, etc.  Feel free to check it out by clicking here.

Some of my favorite wedding themed movies (again, don't judge! *wink*)

The Feast of Firstfruits & Easter Go for Broke Day If it scares you this is the day to go for it no matter what. One Day Without Shoes Day Today is to raise global awareness for children’s health and education.  Why shoes? Because shoes help protect from bacteria in the dirt, rusty nails, dirty needles and shoes enable feet to withstand the long distances most children in developing countries need to walk to get to school. Join TOMS One for One There is plenty of criticism out there for TOMS and its short term solutions. Critics don't even buy the "at least they are doing something" statement.  However, you have to start somewhere. And every bit of awareness helps something go from short term to long term.  We all have a part to play. Read a Road Map Day One of the many reasons I would stink at The Amazing Race is because I never did learn how to read a road map well.  I remember doing worksheets and class lessons on maps and I was able to skate by ...

Butter someone up

There are two probable origins for this idiom and I think both are equally plausible. The first one is that when you spread butter on bread you are buttering it up like one would do when trying to flatter someone. The second is in ancient India there was a practice of throwing balls of butter at statues to ask for favor, i.e. buttering them up. ( source ) When we use the phrase today we generally mean that extreme flattery is used to gain information or favor. It's not always necessarily a compliment.

A dime a dozen

"It's said that in the year 1796, the first U.S. dimes were produced for circulation. Hence, it would make sense for this phrase to originate sometime after." Read more here .  Today the phrase carries the meaning that something is cheap or without value if it can be lumped in with other similar or exactly-like things. It's more of an insult than anything.
