#FamilyFriday

How do families impact society? Or do they? If I'm asking the question then you probably can guess the answer is yes, they do impact society. Today's family friday is about the importance of family on our societies.

The strength, or weakness, of our society starts with the family. Why the family? Because it is the family where people start. It's where we find ourselves - our personalities, our characters, our values. It's where we learn, first, how to interact with other people and how to work in a group as well as individually. The family is where we learn how to be a support to someone and how to be supported by someone. Our families are where we learn how to have emotions in ways that are healthy, where we learn to respond to crisis'.  (source)

When we have people come from weakened family structures we have a society that is weakened. This is because we all contribute to our society with our personalities, characters, values, and how we have learned to interact with others. And if we do that with misunderstanding or misinformation then we don't contribute to a strong, healthy, and able culture. If the majority of us are contributing to society in broken and wounded ways then we have a very dysfunctional way of looking at each other and interacting with other societies around the world.

So yes, family is important to strong societies. And there are many kinds of families these days. There isn't a wrong way to be a family as long as we purpose to have healthy structures and interactions and to do what it takes if we don't. Here's a list of the kind of families we have these days:

So today take a look at your family - you can only do anything within your own - and decide what might need to be done to correct any wrong courses so that all of you can contribute to a strong society.

One Day Without Shoes Day Today is to raise global awareness for children’s health and education.  Why shoes? Because shoes help protect from bacteria in the dirt, rusty nails, dirty needles and shoes enable feet to withstand the long distances most children in developing countries need to walk to get to school. Join TOMS One for One There is plenty of criticism out there for TOMS and its short term solutions. Critics don't even buy the "at least they are doing something" statement.  However, you have to start somewhere. And every bit of awareness helps something go from short term to long term.  We all have a part to play.
