Pass the buck


Pass the buck comes from the game of poker. Once the dealer was done s/he would pass the buck, which was a marker of sorts to track who was dealer in the game. (source)

The figurative version showed up in the early 20th century and became a phrase to use when describing someone trying to get out of responsibility.
