Humbug Day
Yes, it's exactly what you think.
Bah Humbug!
Think outside of the box: it's a candy, it's an album by the Artic Monkeys, it is a video game (a rather old one), and it's a bag.

National Flashlight Day
The Invention of the Flashlight

I like playing flashlight hide and go seek, flashlight tag, or exploring with a flashlight.

My favorite memory of flashlights is from 2007. We had these wind up flashlights on a trip to Kenya. The power had gone out at the place we were staying. After a moment or two of silence the sound of wind up flashlights echoed throughout the halls.  We all had picked up and started winding up those flashlights at the same time! Following the sound of the wind up?  Our giggles.

Look on the Bright Side Day

This holiday is a little tongue in cheek since today also happens to be the shortest daylight day of the year! So while it may get dark way earlier than any of us would like you can still look at the bright side!

Free Shipping Day
Shipping is pricey!  Once I shipped something to a family member and the shipping cost was equal to the cost of the gift! Ridiculous. I know they have to pay for fuel and employees but wow, to ship something these days is crazy.
Today is free shipping for online ordering, or so I'm told. :)  I'm also a fan of paying the annual Amazon Prime fee, it's totally worth it. It gives you free two day shipping and access to their online media streaming.  (And no, I did not get paid for that little plug! ha!)
But today, if the free shipping is true then today is the day to order what you need off the internet - as gifts for others or something you may need.

More bang for your buck

This phrase was used a lot in 1953 but an earlier citation puts it at 1940 in a Metals and Plastics Publications advertisement. Read about it here . The phrase means you get more for your money.

Call it a Day

The literal use of this phrase hails from 1838 when the phrase originally was "call it half a day" to mean leaving work early. (source) The modern use of the phrase is to indicate ending something due to false sense of accomplishment.

Butter someone up

There are two probable origins for this idiom and I think both are equally plausible. The first one is that when you spread butter on bread you are buttering it up like one would do when trying to flatter someone. The second is in ancient India there was a practice of throwing balls of butter at statues to ask for favor, i.e. buttering them up. ( source ) When we use the phrase today we generally mean that extreme flattery is used to gain information or favor. It's not always necessarily a compliment.
