October 10, 2015

October 10, 1974 - 45 days after I was born - Sarah was born. Our parents had double dated, been in each other's weddings, pregnant Mama's rubbed their bellies together. We were the kind of family that can be deeper than blood.
Today Sarah would be 41 years old. (For Sarah's story click here.)
I will celebrate her life by drinking an Arnold Palmer, baking her scone recipe, and watching a few episodes of The Office, the last show she loved to watch before she flew away to be with Jesus. Oh I'll probably run the vacuum too, she LOVED to vacuum - for real!  I love you Sarah.

In America we generally call it oatmeal, other countries call it porridge. Doesn't matter what it's called, it's just yummy!  I am a big fan of oatmeal, I know lots of people who have texture issues with it - I'm so sad for them!  :)  And I have only ever made porridge with oatmeal but I have learned that it can be other grains and cereals - yay!
I love that porridge is versatile.  It can be savory or sweet.  I usually have it 'sweet' and usually only for breakfast. But I found some savory recipes that look delicious, here's one that makes my mouth water.
Here are some other savory recipes.  My mouth is watering, I am definitely making some of these!

Cake Decorating Day
I always thought it would be fun to take a cake decorating class. Not for any business kind of reason but for fun, for family parties and such.  So maybe today I'll do something about it. Maybe today I will hunt down an affordable class to take, anyone want to join me?  (Of course, you have to be in my area to join me but there's plenty of you around!)
Ah! It's this book!
In fact, my Mama made 2 cakes for my 1 year old birthday
and this cake was one of them.
My Mama has this super old cut-out cakes book, it's falling apart and I love it. Throughout the redheads early years I would use it as a guide to make cakes. Here's some of my attempts, which I'm kinda happy with!

I love cake decorating so much that I created a Pinterest board just for cakes I found that amazed me. Check these out!

I've also made a sailboat, castle, barn, and cat face cut-out cakes.

World Homeless Day
There are so many reasons for homelessness. And those reasons vary by country even. Let's not make assumptions and snap judgements about the homeless we see, let's just advocate for their basic human rights.

Call it a Day

The literal use of this phrase hails from 1838 when the phrase originally was "call it half a day" to mean leaving work early. (source) The modern use of the phrase is to indicate ending something due to false sense of accomplishment.

More bang for your buck

This phrase was used a lot in 1953 but an earlier citation puts it at 1940 in a Metals and Plastics Publications advertisement. Read about it here . The phrase means you get more for your money.

Butter someone up

There are two probable origins for this idiom and I think both are equally plausible. The first one is that when you spread butter on bread you are buttering it up like one would do when trying to flatter someone. The second is in ancient India there was a practice of throwing balls of butter at statues to ask for favor, i.e. buttering them up. ( source ) When we use the phrase today we generally mean that extreme flattery is used to gain information or favor. It's not always necessarily a compliment.
