#WellnessWednesday

Guess what today's #WellnessWednesday topic is about? Those coveted zzzzzzzzz's we all NEED each day/night in order to function well.

How's your sleep been? Mine has been awful for the most part. Just awful. I have these weird periods of insomnia, backward sleeping patterns (think newborn - up all night, sleeping all day), restlessness, and...snoring - ugh! I saw the following list of symptoms of deprivation and could agree with most of them when it comes to me. Are you experiencing any of the following?

To add to those negative outcomes of sleep deprivation I found this about the effects of deprivation on our mental health long term. No wonder insomnia is a serious issue that needs to be fixed in people.

So let's talk sleep. Sometimes it's as simple as putting down your phone, cooling off your room a bit, and shutting off your brain. Sometimes it's not that simple. At times you might need to take a warm bath in addition to what I just mentioned and pop a melatonin. And other times it takes a few more extreme measures. But do whatever it takes to get the sleep you truly need, even if that means getting to a doctor and discussing interventions. And how much is that? Well most recommendations follow this:

And when you get the sleep your body, and mind, need each night - consistently - here are some of the benefits you can expect...

So today as you consider your overall wellness for this wednesday take a long look at your overall sleep. Are you deprived? Do you need to make some changes to your nighttime routines to increase your chances of good and healthy sleep? Do you need to make a doctor's appointment and get some medical help to address any sleep issues you have identified? Do what you need to, sleep is vital for your overall health and wellbeing.

Butter someone up

There are two probable origins for this idiom and I think both are equally plausible. The first one is that when you spread butter on bread you are buttering it up like one would do when trying to flatter someone. The second is in ancient India there was a practice of throwing balls of butter at statues to ask for favor, i.e. buttering them up. ( source ) When we use the phrase today we generally mean that extreme flattery is used to gain information or favor. It's not always necessarily a compliment.

Call it a Day

The literal use of this phrase hails from 1838 when the phrase originally was "call it half a day" to mean leaving work early. (source) The modern use of the phrase is to indicate ending something due to false sense of accomplishment.

More bang for your buck

This phrase was used a lot in 1953 but an earlier citation puts it at 1940 in a Metals and Plastics Publications advertisement. Read about it here . The phrase means you get more for your money.
