Well, since there is no quick way to the places I want to arrive I guess I'm taking the stairs. SIGH. I hate the stairs. I mean I REALLY hate them. And I've got a mind block when it comes to more than 3 stairs. If I see the whole staircase I lose my motivation to get up it. But if I take it in sections I can tackle it easier. One section at a time is a similar thought to slow and steady wins the race. I think that's the key to motivation, persisting one step at a time.
There are two probable origins for this idiom and I think both are equally plausible. The first one is that when you spread butter on bread you are buttering it up like one would do when trying to flatter someone. The second is in ancient India there was a practice of throwing balls of butter at statues to ask for favor, i.e. buttering them up. ( source ) When we use the phrase today we generally mean that extreme flattery is used to gain information or favor. It's not always necessarily a compliment.
