For Saturday, March 23: Are you settling for less?

We accept the love we think we deserve.  Stephen Chbosky

Oy.  When I read this quote I thought to myself, "ouch."  I recognize this in myself, how about you?  With immediate clarity I realized I have, in the past, sabotaged relationships that might be offering more love than I think or feel I deserve.  I'm willing to bet *you* have done it or still do it as well.  Somehow along the way of my life journey I let bad and wrong belief about myself define the love I will accept.  And I've let that definition dictate my relationships and the level of affection.  I've decided certain things about the interactions in my relationships and become uncomfortable when someone comes along that once to crash through that definition and challenge it.  Or I accept less because I don't deserve more.  Ugh, right?  But I'm pretty sure *you* know exactly what I am talking about.
How do you see today's quote in your life?  Or do you?

Butter someone up

There are two probable origins for this idiom and I think both are equally plausible. The first one is that when you spread butter on bread you are buttering it up like one would do when trying to flatter someone. The second is in ancient India there was a practice of throwing balls of butter at statues to ask for favor, i.e. buttering them up. ( source ) When we use the phrase today we generally mean that extreme flattery is used to gain information or favor. It's not always necessarily a compliment.

Call it a Day

The literal use of this phrase hails from 1838 when the phrase originally was "call it half a day" to mean leaving work early. (source) The modern use of the phrase is to indicate ending something due to false sense of accomplishment.

More bang for your buck

This phrase was used a lot in 1953 but an earlier citation puts it at 1940 in a Metals and Plastics Publications advertisement. Read about it here . The phrase means you get more for your money.
