For Friday, August 10: Connect the 18 inches

The work of the eyes is done. Go now and do the heart-work on the images imprisoned within you. Rainer Maria Rilke

What we allow ourselves to see is important to what our hearts look forward to do.  But sometimes the images are hard.  And I've seen in many people an unwillingness, knowingly or unknowingly, to let what they have seen impact their heart so they can go do the heart-work necessary.
A couple of months ago there was a docu-film released called, "No Kid Hungry".  It focused on hungry kids in America.  I watched it and there were some hard realities about kids in America shared.  I wanted my oldest to watch it - I think it's important she understand and see what is happening in our local communities, never mind the world.  We'll get to that.  She won't watch it.  She doesn't want to see suffering, she doesn't want to cry at what she sees and hears (because she will and she knows it).  She is unwilling to even see with her eyes so that her heart can work.  (Eventually she will get there - I know she will because I know her...and because I'm the Mama! *grin*)  She's not alone.  Many of us refuse to even look with our eyes because then we know our hearts will have to go to work.
I triple dog dare you to look.  Looking is hard and the heart work is hard but it is so worth it.  It really is.  Don't let what you see take you over but go and do something about it.  There's approximately 18 inches between your eyes and your heart - make the connection, you won't regret it.

One Day Without Shoes Day Today is to raise global awareness for children’s health and education.  Why shoes? Because shoes help protect from bacteria in the dirt, rusty nails, dirty needles and shoes enable feet to withstand the long distances most children in developing countries need to walk to get to school. Join TOMS One for One There is plenty of criticism out there for TOMS and its short term solutions. Critics don't even buy the "at least they are doing something" statement.  However, you have to start somewhere. And every bit of awareness helps something go from short term to long term.  We all have a part to play. Read a Road Map Day One of the many reasons I would stink at The Amazing Race is because I never did learn how to read a road map well.  I remember doing worksheets and class lessons on maps and I was able to skate by to pa
