#TastyTuesday

Got spices? One of the easiest, and best, ways to make food tasty is spices. I didn't understand this when I started cooking on my own. Salt and pepper were okay - maybe even Italian seasoning but anything past that was just too crazy for this chick to consider!

Years ago - in what was, I believe, a totally different life - I sold Tupperware. And Tupperware had a few recipe books, one of the recipes I made and we loved it. But it called for this weird spice named "cumin" and I was like, "Uh, no." And we liked it fine without it. I had never tried this spice and I felt no need to go beyond salt and pepper. Then one night I made the recipe for company coming over and on a whim I decided to try the cumin. MIND. BLOWN. I couldn't believe I hadn't used it before. What was I missing by not using spices? So from that moment on when a recipe called for a spice I tried it. And a whole new world - of flavor - opened up to my fam and I.

So #TastyTuesday focus is spices. If you aren't using them - try! Please! You will be amazed. If you are using them - yay! Keep on and maybe try some new-to-you ones. In fact, wondering what some of the essentials are? Here's a list of suggested spices to always have on hand.

Oh and anyone else have a spice cabinet that has bottles upon bottles of spices - some used? Some not opened? Some from the 1970's? Maybe take a few minutes today to evaluate the freshness of your spices - they do expire! *wink*

And if you don't clean them out while you are living you may get buried with them. Ha!

One Day Without Shoes Day Today is to raise global awareness for children’s health and education.  Why shoes? Because shoes help protect from bacteria in the dirt, rusty nails, dirty needles and shoes enable feet to withstand the long distances most children in developing countries need to walk to get to school. Join TOMS One for One There is plenty of criticism out there for TOMS and its short term solutions. Critics don't even buy the "at least they are doing something" statement.  However, you have to start somewhere. And every bit of awareness helps something go from short term to long term.  We all have a part to play. Read a Road Map Day One of the many reasons I would stink at The Amazing Race is because I never did learn how to read a road map well.  I remember doing worksheets and class lessons on maps and I was able to skate by to pa
