Say cheese

There is no real known origin for this popular saying that one usually hears or says during picture taking time. Why the word 'cheese'? Generally when people say it their teeth show and their mouths go up in a natural smile. Perfect for the photographer trying to capture the subjects smiling. ( source )

The bee's knees

The origin for this idiom is all over the place, what I mean to say is there are several different ideas and no real answer. And why it means what it does today is unknown as well - it means excellent or high quality. Whaaaa?

Elbow room

Today's idiom isn't so much a phrase as it is just a regular truth. In order to do some things we need elbow room - or ample space - to accomplish those things.

Ball is in your court

The origin of this phrase is literal. When the ball is in your court, or your side of the court, then it is clearly your turn to hit it, etc. ( source )

Third wheel

This phrase was born from the original phrase 'fifth wheel' and throughout time the number of wheels was reduced to three - ha! How it came to mean what it does today - a third person attending a date clearly meant for just two people - is anyone's guess. ( source )

Ace in the hole

Originating with the poker game this phrase means that there is a sure victory with the hand dealt.

Lady in red

The label 'lady in red' originated with a woman named Anna Sage who assisted the FBI in the capture of gangster John Dillinger in 1934. The oldest profession is prostitution and typically those women are called 'ladies of the night' but Anna became the 'lady in red' due to her outfit she was wearing the night Dillinger was caught, she was also a Madam of a brothel. Her outfit was actually an orange skirt and white top but the nickname was given nonetheless based off of her promise to wear red - even though she changed her mind about that. You can read all about it here .  How it came to be a saying today and what it actually means is a mystery but there is a song about it, sung by Chris De Burgh.
